What is OMNI-Carb?
OMNI-Carb stands for Optimal Macronutrient Intake for Carbohydrate. It is a research study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of our federal government. Two centers on the east coast will be conducting the study. They are Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
We would like to find out which of 4 eating patterns offers the most protection from the risk factors that lead to heart disease and diabetes.
Two of the eating patterns will be a carbohydrate-rich diet and 2 will be lower in carbohydrates. The type of carbohydrate is also important in this study. We will use a system called the Glycemic Index, which puts carbohydrates in categories based on how they affect your blood sugar. The diets will be based on 2 levels of the Glycemic index, high and low. The diets lower in carbohydrates will have more protein and fat to make up for the carbohydrates. |
