What happens during the study?

Before you enter the study you must attend 3 separate screening visits at your site.  You will be asked to give blood and urine samples, and to fill out questionnaires about your health and eating habits.

If you are eligible after the screening visits you will then go through a “run-in” phase, which is 8 days long.  You will eat only food that we give you and these 8 days will have 2 days of each of the 4 eating patterns.

Then, there will be four separate five-week diet periods with 2 weeks between each diet where you eat normally.  You will come into the research center to eat at least one meal per day, each weekday.  You can expect to spend 20 minutes to an hour at the center each time you come in. We will weigh you every time you come in.

This is not a weight loss study and we will help you maintain your weight.  At some of your visits, we’ll also be checking your blood pressure and doing certain blood tests to learn the affect of the diet on your body. These blood tests will require time at the study site.  During each study period, you will have blood drawn.   At various times we will ask you to complete a 24-hour urine collection.
